Hmm updating didn't fail for me when I tested on a separate machine. Try uninstalling and reinstalling? Could also be related to a new version of Atom. I'll investigate

Did you try checking that the package.json shown in the stack trace actually exists in that directory? Can't imagine why it wouldn't, but maybe something weird happened.

I'm currently trying to reproduce this on macOS 10.11.6, atom 1.9.9, package 1.4.8 -> 1.4.9, let's see if it breaks.

Nope, everything seems to work fine, even after a reload.
I'd guess it was some sort of network error (maybe atom.io was down for some seconds).
