I'm closing this issue. Recently vtkMedicalImageInformation was added to the reader, and it will return much of the basic image information. It's much better if people access the metadata via vtkDICOMMetaData. Perhaps some way of turning the meta data into VTK field data would be the best approach, because the information could then become available within ParaView.
