Providing a DNS record instantly is less generic and often more complicated than putting a file in a static folder.
I'm not the author but I think this is completely out of scope for this tiny little library.
You can always generate a cert with the help of a web server and then use it differently ever after. acme-tiny does not install the cert anywhere.

You are right. I created a dummy website and could get certificates for my imaps server that way.

I wrote a tiny library (also written in python) called lexicon that provides a generic way to add DNS records to DNS providers who have API's. There are 10 providers supported right now, but we're adding more all the time.
