Indeed, the format changed, and it is documented -- however, the online version of the documentation is not fully up-to-date with the latest git version. So, please refer to the manual the comes with the git version (C-h i d m mu4e RET).
Regarding org-contacts, that's indeed possible, see the section 'Maintaining an address-book with org-contacts' in the manual.

Right, thanks - I didn't notice the built-in manual.
However, about the org-contacts question, I was asking about a way to insert addresses from org-contacts into a message's To: field. The 'Maintaining an address-book with org-contacts' section in the manual talks about adding addresses to org-contacts (with actions ). from a message's from: field. (I misspoke earlier when I mentioned message-mode. I meant draft/compose mode)

Nevermind. I found that <\tab> in the To: field completes addresses.
However, there appears to be a caveat. The completion only works if there are no spaces.
To: fro<\tab> doesn't work
To:fro<\tab> ---> To:frodo baggins [email protected]
I suppose it's something to do with the setup of the regexps for when you decide to enable tab-completion.
I was thrown off because getting into compose mode puts you on the To: header line, except it automatically puts in the first space for you, so tab completion from there on in doesn't work :).

what versions are you using (emacs and mu4e)? mu4e (git version) has built-in address completion, which works on emacs 24 and emac 23.4+.

git-pulled,compiled and installed mu4e yesterday before messaging you. Restarted emacs as well.
running emacs24.
Maybe the non-address-completion when there is a space is a quirk of my setup. I'll have to look into it.
(It happens for subsequent addresses as well.. To:[first address], fro[tab] doesn't work, but does work if no space is given after the comma)

thanks for checking! it should work now with emacs 23.2+, and I just tested the comma-addresses, at least here they seem to work now.
