Decided to go with the latter solution. Scalars representing floating point numbers with very large or very small magnitudes will now officially be formatted in scientific notation. Strings like "5e+2"
or "-.1e-10"
, when used in numeric contexts, will be interpreted as scientific notation, but strings like "5e2"
or "-.1e"
will not (these will evaluate to 5
and -0.1
, as before). No change has been made to the scanner, so the sequence 5e+2
in a Pip program is not a floating point literal but rather two expressions, 5
and e + 2
.
