It seems the previous Delicious operators had trouble scaling this service, which gets 5k+ tps, and hardcoded an empty JSON response in an attempt to reduce server load.
It has been unavailable since last May.
We're looking into some more scalable implementations but they're still on pencil and paper. Keep you posted!

LOL ... with the exception of one of the servers in rotation, which was probably down when they pushed their code and is still faithfully returning JSON.

Looks like the call for a number of saves for a page is working using "https://avosapi.delicious.com/api/v1/posts/md5/{url md5}
