Playtested successfully, with slightly looser rule: you can only move a piece if it either starts or ends on your half of the board.
Experimented with passing a coin back and forth to restrict communication, but it was a bit confusing and probably unneeded. Just suggest that you agree with your partner how much talking to allow, and require that all communication has to be understandable to all players. No secret codes or second languages. Make it clear that players are totally free to decline their partner's advice.

Might be interesting as a speed variant, where you lose a minute for each move that you discuss with your partner. Too mean?
