I could be wrong, but I think the CP2K users want to update builds more often than the release cycle of the CP2K devs, because they want to start using new stuff early. So, I'm not sure whether strictly following this versioning will be sufficient, but we should definitely support it.

We should support checking out from svn or git, using a revision id or tag instead of version number.
Other projects are also changing to not releasing tarbals, but just point to git.
