So you would want an empty list as opposed to an exception indicating that you shouldn't be looking for subfields in a Control Field?

Or a more descriptive exception, if you're against an empty list. The current situation looks like a bug, if it was intentionally done.

It wasn't intentionally done. But you also have a bug in your use of pymarc, since control fields do not have subfields. The question is the best way to surface that the user of pymarc is doing things wrong. I'm still leaning towards an exception so I'm going to close this.
