It was a weird conflict with an older version of the mode that was the culprit! Problem solved.

Oh, hah, thanks for the heads-up - I'm glad it works now. Guess it should be possible to detect older/conflicting versions of the mode & warn about them. Want to give it a shot? (-:

If people were as big doofuses as I am, I guess it would pay to have a safe-guard like that. :)
That said, I did play around for a minute, but couldn't find a single good solution. (fboundp? featurep? autoloadp? Yikes!)

Oh my, yeah, these don't sound confidence-inspiring - I was thinking of something like checking the boundp-ness and value of the elixir-mode-version variable; that should pretty accurately indicate whether that's loaded (-:
