"It doesn't prevent stealing it, but it prevents others from releasing an update for your app.

An App which as been installed with a certain certificate, can only be updated if the update is signed with the same signature too.

That being said, you should keep your keystore more secure than your money and everything else you have (do 3 or 4 backups of it, store it at difference places etc.). If you ever loose the keystore, you will never again be able to update your Android App and no one can help you, not even Google."
