There is something else wrong. The asterisks are wildcards, they must be escaped if you don't want them to be operators. As it says in the docs:
If you need to use any of the characters which function as operators in your query itself (and not as operators), then you should escape them with a leading backslash.
So *query* is perfectly acceptable, and it means, zero or more charactersqueryzero or more characters.
A leading wildcard is inefficient, but allowed.
