I noticed the same issue as well. The problem surfaces when you use Flux v0.6.9, but if you go back one version to Flux v0.6.8 the problem disappears.
It appears that something is broken in the version upgrades and how it interacts with CuArrays.

The MNIST example is running without errors on gpu with Flux v0.6.9 and NNlib v0.4.2
with NNlib v0.4.3 you get this error message, even in combination with Flux v0.6.8

MNIST now has a cuda manifest, so this should be resolved, but let me know if you run into any issues.
