Yeah I don't think this type of interaction is supported in the PDF format. PDFs should be thought of like digital paper - they are pretty static (besides some form features). This type of interaction sounds perfect for HTML. Can you use that?

I'm already using html. I was hoping I could generate PDFs to pass around with some common functionality with our web pages.
This may be a really stupid idea. Maybe everywhere you could pull up a PDF you could also pull up a web page. But if this is true, wouldn't html totally replace PDFs?

Not quite, because with HTML you don't have quite the same fine grained level of control over your printed output.
