Some areas are not cached on the OpenTopo server for all zoom levels, instead they will be generated on demand when requesting them. This takes several seconds per tile on the server. Can you try to load the same area on the same zoom level directly on http://opentopomap.org to see if it loads faster there?

No trouble loading it there, all the zoom levels in the area load fully in about 5 seconds, I'll have a see what exactly it's doing with wireshark and report back.

I seem to be unable to replicate the problem now, I've had it happen twice before so I'll close this for now until I'm able to gather more information.

Someone else reported the same on the forum, the error was also in a small timeframe only. I believe OpenTopoMap just had a short downtime.
