The filename is currently chosen automatically. The certfile option does no longer exist.
This was done so as to not expose the file layout through the API.

You could use import_certfile to have your cert copied to the right location for easy setup.
I also remember that it made several parts of the client class simpler not having to store the certfile.

On the other hand: The unassigned variable filename in the error print statement is a bug.

I do acknowledge though that leaving the option name to be certfile instead of import_certfile, while being less descriptive, would have probably helped convert old instances to the new version. Maybe we should accept both for a few versions?

This is a change from 1.0 to 1.1. (release only a few days ago. The config file format has changed. The example config was changed accordingly. We should probably start writing changelogs for the releases.

It would help to have a short desription of that functionality within the readme, because if one searches for occurences of "import_certfile" no results are shown.

There might be a bug remaining:
If you call find_by_id it calls load_clients: Just in case the parameter "import_certfile" is given in yaml, the cert file is imported. But certfiles are not loaded into the client object (i.e. into apply_values or later just adding the field to the client). In my understanding somewhere the certificate must be loaded.
I am using the front end's clients page.

if ccnf['import_certfile']

This is probably the line you are searching for, but yes, I will update the readme in the coming days
