I am going to close this on the account that it not related to scalatest 3.0.1.
I observe the same issue with latest code.

Yes, it is an issue. When you update to scalatest 3.0.1

+libraryDependencies ++= Seq("org.scalatest" %% "scalatest" % "3.0.1",
... then, the following patch needs to be applied :
