An additional layer seemed to create a lot of problems, so this will not be
done. However, I realised I could achieve the desired effect by disabling
depth-write on the far-away stars and manually setting the depth to a large value
(I chose 0.1 in this case, might need to calculate that value from actual
distance in future). This fixes the god-rays issue and ensures the stars are
behind everything except the skybox.
