These don't work because they are simply not implemented in the SQL provider (yet). The only extension methods you can use are those that correspond to the list of supported query expression keywords. For example, Single() and Count() will work just as as will Join(), Where(), SelectMany() and so on.
We will add more of these as time goes on. First is quite easy to implement as it's just (take 1), whereas others are much more complex.

I added First() for you :) this means you can now use either the extension method, or a query like this
query{ for c in table do
head }
OH ! It is also clever, it doesn't select everything then throw it all away, it calls take 1 so it only selects the one row from the database
