Before you or I do any work on this in earnest, it might be useful to confirm that this will actually work with Heroku. There are two problems I can forsee:

• It doesn't do you any good to use version 9 of the client library if the server itself is still 8.x. Are you targeting a 9.x server somewhere?
• Will Heroku allow you to upload a statically-compiled gem from your own machine to theirs? It doesn't seem like that would be a good idea on their part on multiple levels.

So vendoring binaries is an option, but kind of a crummy one. Gems are all installed and binary gems compiled when the code is pushed, so any compilation required happens then. There's probably a way to pass arguments to that install process via bundler, so that bears investigation.

At this point, really, I think a simple proof that this even can work is a good starting point. I'll ask around and see if I know anyone who might have good advice for how to determine which version to build against?
