ggplot2::aes has issues with this that I can not get around directly. I'm adding labels to get around this issue.

Example:

> map <- ggplot2::aes_string(x = "asdf / asdf")
> map
List of 1
 $ x: language asdf/asdf
> as.character(map)
          x 
"asdf/asdf"

This does not match the spaces that were added.

Therefore labels are the easiest option to fix this.
