I've checked the code, and it looks like in all versions of Gibbon, past and present, the Fast Finder is only searching the preferred name + surname of the student, along with their form group. If the chinese characters are included in the student's preferred name or surname, it is finding them as expected, see below:
I think we could look at including the "Name in Characters" field in the search results, however this would be a feature request for a future version. We are just wrapping up the development for v24, but can look at adding it to the roadmap for v25.
