The scope of this is being changed. For now I am going to enforce that all urls are https. There doesn't seem to be a consistent way to translate between https and ssh protocols. For those users who are hell bent on using ssh (I'm in that camp) you have options
After cloning all dependencies using https retarget the remote to ssh
OR clone all dependencies manually ahead of time.
neither of these options are ideal. I've flirted with the idea of specifying both the https and ssh checkout urls, and then allowing the user to specify which protocol to use when checking out.
I may still go this route in the future, but I want to see how bad it is to just force https.
