Yeah, that change wouldn't be backward compatible.
It is possible to change mapped types with a custom generator(sample). Only on develop branch at the moment.
Using custom generator, string field can be replaced with a []byte or with a custom type for json column. Custom type needs to implement Scanner Scan(value interface{}) error and Valuer Value() (driver.Value, error) interface.
