The Go-specific structure represents the common project layout patterns emerging in the Go ecosystem. That's the main reason. The 'cmd' layout pattern, for example, is one of those. If you look at the 'cmd' directory it provides a number of well known Go projects that utilize the pattern (e.g., https://github.com/prometheus/prometheus/tree/master/cmd ).
Either way, you are free to pick any or none of those patterns. Ultimately it's up to you how you want to structure your projects :-)
