The Go code simply copies the canonical C++ code's MaxCompressedLength function in https://github.com/google/snappy/blob/master/snappy.cc#L55

I'm possibly mis-remembering, but I think that, in the past, the C++ code emitted 5-byte-long copies. But that was removed, and nobody updated the MaxCompressedLength function. I don't think it ever seemed important to make that return the tightest possible bound, just a good enough bound.

If you really think that the formula can be improved, convince the C++ snappy maintainers to change it, and Go will follow C++'s lead.
