I filed an issue for this – that they should be a different colour. Used to be underline on hover.

Links now are underlined more consistently

Please implement the following behavior:

  • Links are not underlined by default.
  • When the user hovers over a link, it is underlined.

This what I originally intended to request when I opened this issue. This change will clean up the visuals while keeping links discoverable. This is the behavior on the Google search results page: https://www.google.com/#q=links

@PaulKinlan @peduarte what do you think of this?

Hey!

Thinking back on this...

We wanted to keep a very consistent behaviour across all devices. Which is why we went for the underline decoration of links and no underline on hover.
This way, it is very clear for users on touch devices.

Thanks!

On mobile-optimized sites, underlined links are uncommon: news.google.com nytimes.com google.com yelp.com uber.com

Instead, touch affordances are indicated by app-y looking tappable regions or cards. This is the UI we had on the documentation index page. Once issue #361 is fixed, then it will be obvious that the links are tappable on mobile even without the underlines.

Colour can also be useful, to signify navigation and links.
