When frozencache
was implemented in 2016, \mdfivesum
was just being added to XeTeX, so there wasn't a way to do hashing across all LaTeX engines. That is now possible, so hashing should be considered for the future. However, switching to hashing instead of numbering isn't straightforward, because fancyvrb
never collects an entire environment at once, but only processes a single line at a time. So hashing would involve some sort of algorithm that hashes a line combined with the current hash to produce a new hash, and then repeats the process until the final line is reached.
