As for max khz step rate this is depedent on which processor is used, the iMXRT1062 that Phil is using is by far the fastest.
If your board is used for laser engraving bit maps (typically lots of short movements) the size of the planner buffer affects the max feed rate achiveable, tuning this may help a lot to increase speed. More info here.
