Hmm. This might be that pyyaml converts certain strings that looks like datetime objects to real datetime objects. If you would add quotes to "2013-05-23" this would not happen. Either this or if pyyaml supports disabling this automatic convertion of datetime objects so that the code do not have to handle the 2 different ways.

Ahh, that may be it.

The templates that we see out in the wild never seem to have quotes around this particular string. We may need to do some pre-processing. Will look some more.
