Solved my own problem, needed to use globs:
gulp.task( 'deploy', function () {
return gulp.src('dist/**/*')
.pipe(sftp({
host: 'mydomain.com',
user:'tech',
remotePath:'/home/tech/htdocs/',
auth: 'privateKey'
}));
} );
from gulp-sftp.
