It is really just a consequence of how the back end of boar works. Originally,
there was no need to create any session before importing. Whatever session name
you specified when importing was accepted and created. After making a few
typos, and realizing that I very rarely really wanted to create a new session,
I changed the behavior so that import requires a pre-existing session. And the
command mksession was then necessary to be able to create new sessions.
Intuitively, I personally kind of like that there is an empty first revision
that you add stuff to. Also, sometimes I prefer to create an empty session,
check that out, and add all the files directly to the work directory instead of
importing.
I'll mark this issue "WontFix" for now, but if you can argue convincingly that
this issue confuses people, it would be easy to just hide that first revision
in the listing.

Thanks for your response. I agree that having an empty revision makes sense as
it *is* empty when you first create it after all. I was mostly just curious as
to the rationale behind it. The only minor tweak I might suggest is adding a
default log entry for that first revision that says something like "%session
name% created" or something along those lines. That way when a user does a
"boar list <session>" command, it is immediately obvious why that empty
revision exists.
