Some additional details in the event it's useful; I can also confirm seeing the above error and am witnessing on a Ubuntu 12.04 x64 installation with cabal & ghc installed from APT. Everything else is installed by cabal. Applying kivikakk's helpful suggestions results in a successful compile. Versions:
cabal-install version 0.14.0
using version 1.14.0 of the Cabal library
The Glorious Glasgow Haskell Compilation System, version 7.4.1

I was also using cabal in this case.
Since making the change to -> I've managed to do a successful compile.
