I had the same problem. Fixed by changing try to:

try :: Host -> ClientM a -> IO a
try (manager, baseUrl) client = either throwIO return =<< runClientM client (ClientEnv manager baseUrl)

Hmm, @rikvdkleij, I'm assuming that you also tried to build it with cabal instead of stack?
