As discussed in #94, I believe this ship has sailed long ago. It would be undesirable to change the behaviour of split, because it may affect tons of packages in unexpected and hideous ways. It also does not look worth introducing a new split' function. IMO we should just clarify this behaviour in haddocks and live with it.

I agree with this assessment.
It might be nice to have a generalized version of the split package that offers a consistent splitting API across various sequence types. Clearly this cannot be solved within this project though.
