You can uncheck Automatically open new views on connection in the windows preferences.

You could then use the global view (Cmd/Ctrl-1) to view the events.
The currently active filter condition can be saved using Cmd/Ctrl-I. This adds it to the Conditions page in the preferences. You can give it a name and assign border, background and text color that would automatically be used if the condition is switched to Active. It will also show up in the Saved conditions submenu of the Focus and Exclude menus - so you can easily reuse previously used conditions.

Regarding table layout... You can right-click the header row of the table.

You can select the rows you want to see and save the layout once you have it configured to your liking.
That functionality is arguably a bit hidden at the moment...
