The addition of a [JR]akefile to build pieces together but also do minification would be nice.

After mulling this over a little more, for the time being I'd like to stick to a single-file library. It allows us to do setup and namespacing within a single closure, and provides a common baseline of functionality that is assumed if you load Backbone.

If the library were bigger than 3k compressed, perhaps we should be more worried about it, but give or take half a k isn't much to be concerned about. If you're a real power user, I'd suggest just replacing sync with your own version, in your copy of Backbone.
