This is intentional. When we convert "" into " <- " the user saves 4
key strokes. If we convert "
" into "<-" only two key strokes would be
saved. This is how Emacs/ESS works and this is why so few objects in R
packages include an underscore in their names.

If you type "" again, the " <- " will be converted in a single
underscore. If you don't want "
" being converted into " <- " at all,
put in your vimrc:

let vimrplugin_underscore = 0

I may also add an option to bind the keys Alt- to " <- " insertion,
like RStudio does.

I renamed the option vimrplugin_underscore to vimrplugin_assign and created a new one: vimrplugin_assign_map. The documentation has the details.
