I remember dithering about this because, yes, GitHub's example includes the path to the IdentityFile
. Yet this answer StackExchange does not and this omission is discussed explicitly in the comments:

Have you suffered from a lack of it?
from happy-git-with-r.
Reading http://nerderati.com/2011/03/17/simplify-your-life-with-an-ssh-config-file/ suggests that IdentityFile
is important for git if you're using different keys for different hosts - so maybe it's left there as safety measure in case you do later configure other keys?
Reading https://developer.apple.com/library/content/technotes/tn2449/_index.html suggests that maybe we could include
IgnoreUnknown UseKeychain
And then have a file that works on all versions (and will work after you upgrade)
from happy-git-with-r.
The following code appears to work on both El Capitan and Sierra
IgnoreUnknown AddKeysToAgent,UseKeychain
Host *
AddKeysToAgent yes
UseKeychain yes
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_rsa
I had a student with El Capitan test it out.
