What's the background on this? What kind of output would be sent without a user request?

Related to #56. Currently all control output is fired off from a user originated request. The system should be able to broadcast system data as a control output without hooking into a specific request to do so.

An example would be, if we are changing colors based on something system-wide, like maybe "average interactions per second over the last minute" , that should (or, could) get broadcast at a set interval even if that number is zero (ie, if no users are interacting with it to do so).

In my head, this may just be a node pattern concern, that using a request as a trigger to fire system events and actions may not be appropriate. When sway is sitting idle I may still want an installation to be controlled.

Oh, I see. You need a heartbeat/timer event to trigger messages to control targets that request system data. Probably use setInterval to ping an EventEmitter.

I don't know that "request" is the right term there, but yes.

The final solution would almost certainly be an interval timer; I wonder if these get set up as channels with a user queue size of 0, maybe. That simplifies config and lets configuration reflect all signal routing rather than just some.

Yeah, by "targets that request" I meant "targets that are declared to want system data in the config file" or somesuch.
