I read on the forums that they were planning to remove the chrome-internal protocol. I hoped they wouldn't, because that really only leaves chrome://apps if users don't want that built-in search stuff but then you lose the most visited sites.

When I get a chance (in about 3 weeks, because of a cross-country move) I'll see if they just renamed the protocol or have exposed the original newtab in a different way. The problem is that chrome://newtab is the page that New Tab Redirect overrides. :\

The work-around of using chrome://apps causes text entry to append to the URL. So for example if I want to search for "firefox" right after creating a new tab, the URL ends up being chrome://appsfirefox and fails.

This just barely happened to me today. Have had NTR set to chrome-internal://newtab/ for months, and have new tabs set to take me to Apps. Today i discovered NRT will only open new tabs with a "Redirecting" message. Did Chrome just update? I really wish they would notify users.

I don't know why I never saw the Apps option inside NTR, I'll be using that from now on until something happens to that too.

Yeah, they removed the original new tab page back in December and it just
hit the stable branch. Google can't seem to keep good parts of their
offerings around.

I need to dig through Chrome's source to see if the original new tab page
is still accessible, I just haven't had time.

The next update to New Tab Redirect will remove the original new tab page
as an option, but now I have to figure out an unobtrusive way to notify
users of why it is gone. Even more annoying is Linux users (like myself)
control the browser updates, so redirecting to the options page essentially
removes the functionality for users that would still have it.

Inside Settings, I had any new tabs set to take me to Apps,, but this no
longer works. I don't know why I never saw the Apps option inside NRT, I'll

Removed chrome-internal://newtab in version 2.2. Pushed to 5% of users, will increase to 25%, 50, 75%, then 100% over the next day or so.
