That would be the function "keys". It was added pretty recently and the docs haven't yet been updated, so I can't really blame you for not finding it :)

jq 'keys'
jq '.interesting_field | keys'

How about implementing this together with recurse? meaning I want to see all keys of root object, and all keys for any child that is also a dictionary, ie. the outline structure of the JSON object (keys only). Is this possible?

The builtin leaf_paths already does pretty much what you want, but you might want to stringify its output, e.g. with this definition:

def leaf_path_strings:
  leaf_paths
  | map(if type == "number" then "[" + tostring + "]" else . end)
  | join(".");

Input:
{"a": 1, "b": { "c": 3} }

Output:
"a"
"b.c"
