It is a quite common technique. Other compilers (SBCL) use it too. The compiler knows how to compile things like (cons a b)
inline, and then you define a function for this (defun cons (a b) (cons a b))
.
If somebody comes up with a generic approach to generate full functions automatically, it will be very welcome. Otherwise, just define a function for each primitive is fine.

There is one issue with this approach however, which I noted in #103: it doesn't work for variadic functions. An automated way to do it would also fix having to redefine these. I'm not sure if this is possible in general though. Consider the following form:
(+ 1 2 3 4)
Under JSCL, this compiles to something like:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4
How would you generate a function for this? You can't just unpack the arguments from the &rest
list and then replicate the above compilation, as you don't know in advance how many arguments there are going to be. The compilation depends on knowing at compile time how many arguments there are, but you can't know that for a function.
Still, generating functions for fixed-arity builtins would be nice, even if we have to manually write them for variadic ones.

It doesn't seem possible with the current implementation with primitives. But there is other possible implementations.
I will think about it while I finish the new compiler. As you said, it would be something nice to have.

I am closing this one. Probably we have more primitive functions which are not defun'ed later. We will fix them as they come by now.
