This is not a bug 😄 This is kerl
warning the consumer that it doesn't know about Pop!_OS, which means it can't expect a given number of packages (as it does for known systems). I think the pull request you did tries to address this issue (haven't looked at it yet), but I'm mostly writing here for reference.
This can also be seen in the code where we comment
# We implement a "best effort" attempt to discover if a Linux distro has the

# knows better than us and are going to go ahead and try to build
# Erlang anyway. But at least there will be a clear warning to the

It should install on the mentioned operating system, in any case, without issues other than the expected warning.
