If the loader is unable to find the layers, then it should return VK_ERROR_LAYER_NOT_PRESENT
when the application calls vkCreateInstace
. So it sounds to me like the real problem is probably that the loader isn't returning an error properly. I'm pretty sure that cube will error out if it gets anything other than success at instance creation time.

This was a combination of a loader bug and a layer bug. The loader really should define a terminator for these commands, but the layer should also verify that the pointer on an extension isn't NULL before calling down. I added the loader terminator so it shouldn't crash anymore with pull-request #95.
