thanks for your feedback and the request.
I really like the idea about simply relaying the 401 response from the registry to the web-browser as you described. Will try to have a look soon.

I've created a separate tag on the docker image (for now):
docker pull klausmeyer/docker-registry-browser:pass-http-basic-auth
It should work out of the box if you don't specify any auth related ENVs.

Just specified DOCKER_REGISTRY_URL and after giving correct username/password was able to browse.

Will remove the pass-http-basic-auth tag again.
