uint8_t just means an unsigned 8-bit integer type, which is usually what an unsigned char is.
You should be able to use char* and uint8_t* interchangeably in this case.

EDIT:
The reason I am using size-annotated types (e.g. uint8_t and uint32_t) is that it makes it explicitly clear how big the variable type is. "Size" here meaning how much space is allocated by the variable and thus how big a range of numbers can be represented.

For example, the size of int and unsigned on 8-bit Arduino/AVR platforms is 16-bit / 2 bytes and on a 32bit machine it is 32 bit and 4 bytes. An unsigned 16-bit int can represent the values 0..65535 where a 32-bit can represent 0..4294967295.

Using the size-annotated types helps portability and programmer sanity in my opinion, in that you don't get as many unpleasant surprises when changing platforms :)
