After doing the following, this actually works:
kubectl -n caaph-system create configmap your-ca --from-file=/path/to/your-ca.file
kubectl edit deploy -n caaph-system caaph-controller-manager
Then ensure the following to the deployment of caaph controller manager:

readOnly: true
- mountPath: /etc/ssl/certs
