Closing as duplicate of #12. Sorry, hadn't seen that one.

Well, it's not exactly a duplicate, and I haven't had much time to keep up with my laspy to-do list.

Glancing at the code, you should be able to make an appropriate numpy data type with something like:

np.dtype([("point", zip([x.name for x in inFile.header.point_format.specs],
                            [x.np_fmt for x in inFile.header..point_format.specs]))])

This is kind of ugly, as I didn't really consider this case. You could also get around this by using the hack of creating a test file in write mode, adding a dimension, and examining what numpy format the file returns. For example,

testFile = laspy.file.File("test.las", mode="w")
testFile.X = [0]*10
numpyPointArray = testFile.points

Otherwise, you should be able to work around this issue by setting the dimensions you're interested in individually. This will be slower than setting the point records together, but should work. The first dimension specified for a new file will re-size the file appropriately, and the rest must be the same length.

@larsmans
Hi, I was stuck by the same problem.
Had you solved this ?

Sincerely.
