Hey just wanted to tag in here and say that I finally tried out the custom default colors and it works great! I love this icon set so much! It's really tasteful and has great visibility. Thank you so much @LaurentTreguier !

What do you mean by "contrasting appearance" ? Do you mean the bright colors of folders like node_modules and such ?
Also thanks for the compliment 😄 I would gladly make an alternate version if it's possible

@LaurentTreguier I'm a big fan of this icon theme! It's great! Hits just the right amount of visual flair without over doing it. The folder icons in particular are much much more readable than the ones in the Material Icon theme I was using before.

I don't know if this was @drewswaycool point but personally I'd like the ability to change the default folder icon colors. I find the beige doesn't fit my color scheme super well. It has a similar visual brightness as the color of my sidebar background and I think it would be nice if I could make it a bright yellow, blue, or maybe a white.

I think it would also be nice if it were possible to assign special icons based globbing patterns like in the Material Icon Theme extension: https://github.com/PKief/vscode-material-icon-theme

Not trying to add a bunch of work on your plate though. I'm a fan!

@jcklpe how about a setting to choose a specific custom color for the default folder ?
EDIT: added in 2adfde8
I'll look into custom glob patterns. Is the standard files.associations setting not sufficient for all cases ? Changing the default language for an extension automatically changes the icon used

@LaurentTreguier That's perfect, thank you! :)

Also I didn't know about the default file:associations settings. Does that work for folders?

edit: doesn't look like it from what I can tell microsoft/vscode#29458

Pretty sure the globbing feature in material icon is custom. It requires a restart after making certain changes which indicates to me that it's injecting CSS and JS into vscode at runtime (which is how the first icon themes were built before they added support for it in the actual settings and extensions).

One thing I like from vscode-icons is how they customize the look of some special folders. it would be great if simple-icons could do something similar to what it's already doing for /build and /node_modules for the following folders:

  • /assets
  • /css: blue like the css logo
  • /js: yellow like the js logo
  • /fonts
  • /img
  • /images
  • /languages

Here's a screenshot showing how the mentioned folders look when using vscode-icons:
